The Council of the UAA has initiated a 'Youth Section' in order to promote the involvement of younger urologists in its activities and to cater to their specific needs. For the moment, it has been decided to focus on the development of research and writing skills to increase the availability of scientific literature from Asian countries.
Our aims for 2011-2014:
1. Educating young urologists about scientific writing methods and getting manuscripts published
2. Study designs and conducting a good study
3. Ethics of medical writing and publishing
4. Developing collaborative studies on common areas of interest
These objectives are aimed to be achieved through:
1. Conducting short term training workshops involving small focus groups for periods ranging from 3 hours to 2 days:
a. Along with national or regional conferences of member nations or regional organizations.
b. Stand-alone activity of the UAA/ regional body.
2. Initiation of UAA-Youth Section Fellowships from the year 2012
Activities conducted:
1. The first UAA Youth Section Session: Instructional Course in Medical Writing & Research was held at the 6th Asian Urology Symposium on 18th of November 2011 in Colombo. The session was conducted by two speakers: Dr Nitin Kekre, Chief Editor, Indian Journal of Urology and Dr Rajeev Kumar, Associate Editor, International Journal of Urology. This 4 hour session was attended by around 50 delegates.
2. The second UAA Youth Section Session: Publishing your article was held in conjunction with the Asian Endourology Meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal on 26th November, 2011. The speakers for this session included Dr Nobuo Shinohara and Dr Rajeev Kumar. Dr Shinohara was supported by the Japan Urological Association. This 2-hour plenary session was interactive and much appreciated.
Upcoming sessions:
A full-day UAA-Youth Section session will be held during the 11th ACU in Pattaya on 25th August, 2012 at the PEACH-4 Room, Pattaya on Medical writing and research. This session will include lectures, hands-on workshops and discussions on posters prepared by the registered attendees. The workshop will primarily be focusing on the UAA-Youth Section Fellows who will be selected from among the member nations.
