The UAA was founded in August 1990 in
Fukuoka, Japan. Its main objective is to promote
Urology in Asia and to improve the care of Urology
patients in the region, which has 60% of the world's
population.
Originally an Association of Individual
members, it has restructured to become an Association
of member nations so as to achieve its goals in more
cost effective ways. Currently, the UAA has 20 member
nations
and one affiliated member
and welcomes more member nations to join.
Apart from the Asian Congress of Urology (ACU)
being held every two years, the UAA helps to run
various workshops and seminars in the region. This was
done through the Asian School of Urology (ASU), and
its subspecialty societies, the Asian Society of
Endourology, and the Asian Society of Uro-Oncology.
It also publishes a newsletter "Asian Urology"
with balanced features of urological news, Association
business meetings, conferences and scientific articles
by Urologists in the region.
The UAA works
closely with International Urological bodies such as
the International Consultations on Urological Diseases
(ICUD), the Society International Urology (SIU), the
European Association of Urology (EAU) and the
Urological Society of Australasia.
Over the
past 20 years, the UAA has gained International
recognition of its modest achievements with the
support of all its members and the executive
committee. It looks forward to more important tasks
ahead to achieve its objective of bringing better
urological care to patients in Asia.
